9th Grade Physics

Course disclosure in English and Spanish

This one-year course fills the core requirement for physics determined by the Utah State Office of Education. In this course physics students will design and perform experiments, and value inquiry as the fundamental scientific process. They will be encouraged to maintain an open and questioning mind, to pose their own questions about objects, events, processes, and results. They will have the opportunity to plan and conduct their own experiments, and come to their own conclusions as they read, observe, compare, describe, infer, and draw conclusions. Students will be encouraged to use reasoning as they apply physics concepts to their world.  This is a required course.

10th Grade Chemistry

In this course students will investigate atoms as the fundamental units of matter and will gain and understanding of their structure, function and behavior.  In our course, there will be five major units that teach chemistry principles and ask students to use those principles to solve a problem: 

  • Cooking up some Chemistry. This unit focuses on the math skills crucial to being a good chemist. We’ll use some historic alchemist recipes to concoct ink, cookies, and more. 
  • Is the Jordan River safe for swimming? Students will learn about the physical and chemical properties of elements and how they are organized on the periodic table. They will use moles to “count” atoms and will perform quantitative research on trace elements in the Jordan River and Great Salt Lake in partnership with a laboratory at the University of Utah. 
  • Who dunnit? Using isotopes, ions, chromatography and quantum mechanics, students will solve a mock murder. 
  • Energy: how should we power our society? Students will build batteries, visit a nuclear reactor, investigate climate change and write letters to elected officials about energy policy. We will conduct original research linking carbon isotopes in tree rings to fossil fuel use. 
  • Is Biodiesel a good alternative fuel? Students will make fuel for a school bus, discuss the shortcomings of the fuel, and design and carry out experiments related to biodiesel. 

This is a required course.

11th Grade Biology

The primary goals of the biology course are (1) students will value and use science as a process of obtaining knowledge based on observable evidence, and (2) students' curiosity will be sustained as they develop and refine the abilities associated with scientific inquiry.  This is a required course.

Instruction will focus on three major themes:

  • Interactions of organisms in an environment are determined by the biotic and abiotic components of the environment.
  • The structures in all living things occur as a result of necessary biological functions.
  • Evolution of species occurs over time and is a result of the interaction of heritable traits and the environment in which the species live.

AP Environmental Science

Course Disclosure in English and Spanish.

AP Environmental Science is “designed to be the equivalent of a one semester introductory college course in environmental science”.  The​ course weaves laboratory and field investigations into an interactive classroom curriculum that includes field trips and guest speakers. This course incorporates the natural sciences along with several aspects of social sciences. 
 
The goal of this course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, and to evaluate the risks associated with these problems and examine alternative solutions for resolving and presenting them.  This is an elective class.  β€‹
 

AP Physics

This one-year course will cover the requirements as defined by the College Board for students to be prepared to pass AP Physics Level 1. Students will develop a deep understanding of foundational principles of physics in classical mechanics and modern physics by applying these principles to complex physical situations that combine multiple aspects of physics rather than present concepts in isolation.

Biotechnology

The purpose of the course is to familiarize students with historical events in biotechnology, commonly used laboratory techniques/equipment and other scientific skills such as experimental design, data management, research of primary literature and writing.

Advanced Science Research

Course Disclosure in English and Spanish.

Students will dig deeply into scientific inquiry. Students will access the tools, time and coaching needed to carry out a college-level science research project.  All students will work together on a class research project plus design and carry out their own investigation to take to the school science fair and beyond.  This rigorous class will include statistics, reading and understanding scientific journal articles, experimental design, an array of new lab techniques and opportunities, data analysis, project presentation, visits to labs and field sites, plus the opportunity to work on a group project and mentor other students on science projects at the end of the school year. Students who sign up should be highly motivated, passionate about science, and have good grades in their previous science and math classes.
 

Medical Anatomy & Physiology

Medical Anatomy and Physiology (MAP) considers the interrelationships between structure of the human body, the function of these structures, and the biological processes that are essential for proper function of the human body. Students will participate in a variety of lab activities and dissections to provide a hands-on, student-centered, active learning experience. Class discussions, lectures, projects, and readings will also be employed to provide a rigorous, engaging learning experience. This course will provide an excellent foundation of knowledge for students interested in learning about how the human body functions.​

Agriculture

Agricultural science considers the many aspects of sustainable food production, including plant propagation, water conservation, soil health, pollination, and pest management. Students will apply information learned in class by participating in several long-term, project-based field experiences, including the year-long maintenance of a garden plot, development and maintenance of a composting system, implementation of a hydroponic system, maintenance of a bee colony, and others.
